Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartika of Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar or of Shalivahan Shaka calendar. Bhai Dooj festival falls during the Diwali or Tihar festival and Holi festival. The Bhai Dooj festival that is celebrated during Diwali is more popular. Furthermore, different regions have different names for this festival. Like, in the entire Northern part of India, this festival is known as Bhai Dooj. In Nepal, this festival is known as Bhai Tika and observed on the fifth day of the Tihar festival. In West Bengal, it is known as Bhai Phonta and celebrated two days after Kali Puja.
